Gangotri :-
The ancient and fascinating legend of Gangotri is that, for many centuries, King Bhagirath performed a series of severe self-suppressing rituals as a way of showing outward repentance for the sins committed by his predecessors. He did very severe penance to bring Nirvana to his ancestors, who are said to have been burnt to ashes due to the curse of a sage.
The daughter of heaven, the river Ganges, which earlier flowed only in heaven, then after a long meditation of Bhagiratha, decided to descend on earth. However, it was said that once the Ganges started flowing, no one could stop the mighty tide and flow of the goddess at the face of the earth, which had the power to sweep away the entire planet. It was then that Lord Shiva decided to lift and flow the water with his valor on the day of Gangavataran or Ganga Dussehra and carried the Ganges in a lock of his hair and left a strand of his hair at Gangotri. The Ganges then flowed from here in the form of 12 streams of water - later called its tributaries. Therefore, Gangotri is the place where the holy river Ganga first touched the earth and has been worshipped for thousands of years..

There is also a huge statue of the Nandi bull outside the temple door which is also worshipped by tourists and a conical rock in the main temple is worshipped as Lord Shiva. It is believed that the Kedarnath temple has been revived by Adi Shankaracharya over the centuries.

Badrinath, known for the holy Badrinath temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is one of the Char Char Dham and Chota Char Dham pilgrimages. Badrinath is situated in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, near the Alaknanda River on the Garhwal hill tracks. Nestled between the Nar and Narayan mountain ranges, the Badrinath Temple is set against the backdrop of the mighty Neelkanth Parvat and is known for its stunning natural beauty.
Situated at an altitude of 10,279 feet, the Badrinath temple is believed to have been originally established by saint Adi Shankaracharya. The temple houses a black stone idol of Lord Vishnu which is 1 meter tall and is believed to be one of the 8 Swayambhu Kshetras or self-manifested idols of Vishnu. It is also mentioned in 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Lord Vishnu in India.Badrinath temple remains closed for six months from November to April every year. In October the temple is closed for worship on the auspicious day of Bhatridvitiya. On the closing day, an Akhand Jyoti lamp is lit for six months and the image of Badrinath is shifted to the Narasimha temple at Jyotirmath. Badrinath reopens every year on Akshaya Tritiya, an auspicious day in April.
The Badrinath temple has a Tapt Kund, a hot sulfur spring that is believed to have medicinal value. The origin of Alaknanda river is believed to be from here. The festivals of Mata Murti ka Mela and Badri Kedar Mahotsav give you another reason to visit the temple.
