India is the largest country in the Indian subcontinent and shares borders with P......n to the northwest, China and Nepal to the north, Bhutan to the northeast, and Bangladesh and Myanmar to the east. Sri Lanka to the south, Maldives to the south-west and Indonesia to the south-east of India in the Indian Ocean. It is the seventh largest country in the world and with over one billion people, it is the second most populous country in the world. It is an extremely diverse country, with vast differences in geography, climate, culture, language and ethnicity, and prides itself on being the largest democracy on Earth.
Situated on the west coast, Goa is the smallest state in India and unlike any other, is known for its endless beaches, stellar nightlife, eclectic seafood, world-heritage listed architecture. Spread over just 3,702 km, Goa is located in the Konkan region. It is far from a hippie haven or a beach getaway, and one of only a few destinations that is open 24x7. Goa's laid-back (Susegad) attracts as many international tourists as it attracts Indians, or even more. The people of Goa are quite tourist friendly and celebrate many festivals throughout the year, the most famous of which are the New Year and the Goa Carnival. While the seafood is excellent, Goa has some of the best nightlife in India with trendy bars, beachfront bars, elegant cafes and numerous clubs and discotheques. For those of us who are always confused between North Goa and South Goa, this might help – the state of Goa is divided into North Goa and South Goa. While North Goa is the nightlife hub with all the tourist beaches, flea markets and beach fringes, South Goa is a land of luxurious resorts and serene beach vibes.Being a Portuguese territory for nearly 450 years, Portuguese architecture is as prevalent as nowhere in Goa – visit one of the many whitewashed churches, crumbling forts or the magnificent churches. Yellow houses with purple doors, ocher-hued mansions and oyster-shell windows complete the kaleidoscope of Goan architecture.Panjim, the centrally located capital city overlooks the serene Mandovi River where Goa's famous floating casinos are docked. The centre is well connected by an international airport and roads and trains running from north to south of Goa. With a coastline of more than 100 kms, Goa has stunning beaches. While Baga and Calangute are more popular with the Indian family crowd, Anjuna and Arambol attract a lot of foreign tourists. Beaches in South Goa are relatively less explored, but some of them like Agonda and Palolem are more beautiful.
Budget Estimate
Goa is not an expensive place to visit if spent wisely. It is one of those places that is visited by the backpackers as well as the luxury-resort loving crowd. There are hotels that offer rooms as low as Rs 200 per night while other up-market hotels offer rooms for Rs 2,000-10,000. If you choose a budget and mid-range hotel, Goa will cost you INR 7000 per person (besides food and water sports) for a week. Sometimes travellers want a longer stay and hence longer stay may cost you INR 3600-9000 per month depending on the location.
History
Goa, in Hindu scriptures, is named Gomant which means the field of cows. It is believed that Parashurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, was the creator of the Goa region. A legend says that he performed a fire sacrifice in the land of Goa along with ten sages.
Sanskritization in Goan culture is said to have originated from the settlement of Parashurama and the rishis of the north, after whom the people of Goa have Brahminical hegemony. Walking down the aisle of its history we come across another legend according to which Goa is considered sacred for its spiritually purifying touch.
Culture
Goa has a fascinating historical past that dates back to the 3rd century BC. A major part of the Maurya Empire, Goa was of prime importance due to its natural harbour and wide river base. Only in 1987, did Goa gets the status of an independent state and the regional language Konkani was recognized as one of the official languages of India.
Goan Life and Culture
A small state on the west coast of India, Goa has always benefited as a trade hub due to its easily accessible ports. With the beautiful harmony of East and West, the people of Goa have had the best of both worlds. A civilization of warm, happy people, Goa sees a mix of different religions like Christian, Catholic, Muslim and Hindu who live together. Following its age-old traditions and customs, all the major festivals of Goa are celebrated with enthusiasm without bringing any religious barrier within the society.Goa has always had a more contemporary mindset, with a strong influence from the West. Their rich heritage culture has not been tarnished by the rapid industrialization that has so far become common in the rest of India. Celebrating lively and religious festivals with sumptuous food and delightful music, the locals are polite, warm and fun-loving.
Food Culture
Food and drink are an integral part of marking the vibrant culture of Goa. The food brings families together, and is mainly a combination of Goan fish curry and rice. Apart from this staple, Goa is also famous for its assorted bags of freshly caught seafood. Prawns, crabs, kingfish with their traditional spicy pickles are a delicacy for the locals. Another festive favorite for Goans is their beef and pork roast which are a must-try during Christmas which is best paired with Goa's famous Bru Feni, which is made from fermented cashews. Other dishes like bebinca (a layered dessert) and khatkhate are essential when friends get together or during festivities.
the Locals Do
Unlike the metropolitan cities in India, the locals of Goa lead a beautiful and relaxed life, living every moment to the fullest. Taking advantage of its location, the most common occupation of the local people is fishing. Due to the fertile land and abundant water supply, often the local people cultivate and grow common foods such as cashew, coconut, jackfruit and other cereals. Furthermore, the next most sought after businesses in Goa are the locally operated shanties, guest houses and tourist guide businesses. They practice the cultivation of local crops and cereals to sustain themselves in the offseason.
Handicrafts
In an area where tourism is the main economy booster, small handicrafts and souvenir jewellery are popular items found in local markets. Skilled craftsmen reuse beach shells and coconut skins to create luxurious ornaments, frames and showpieces for home decor. Apart from this, bamboo, brass and silver are also widely sold as jewellery and artefacts which attract tourists from all over the world.
