Why visit Nahargarh Fort?

Nahargarh Fort, Overview

Nahargarh Fort is located in the Pink City of Jaipur and is one of the many innumerable palaces and beautiful historical buildings that speak of the splendid and rich history of this city. Adorned with delicate carvings and stonework, the Nahargarh Fort is an impregnable structure that, along with its two neighboring forts – Amer and Jaigarh, once stood as a strong defense of the city of Jaipur. The fort was built through Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II in the year 1734 as a retreat. With some breathtaking views of the city, Nahargarh Fort is known for its extended wall that connects it to the Jaigarh Fort. The fort is situated on a hill top and you can hire cabs or autorickshaws at the foot of the hill and trek the rest of the way.

Situated within the premises of Nahargarh Fort, this biological park is another star attraction of the fort. Spread over an area of 7.2 square kilometers of Nahargarh Sanctuary, this biological park is decorated with granite and quartzite rocks. The place also boasts of its rich flora which presents mostly steam deciduous and humid spike forests. Many animals can be seen here in their natural surroundings, some of which include Asiatic Lion, Bengal Tiger and Indian Leopard. The vegetation is composed of plants that are representative of the ecoregion, which is the Kathiawar-Gir dry deciduous forest. Interestingly, the place hosts 285 species of birds, which makes it a delight for a bird watcher. Expect to spot birds such as the White-naped Tit, which can only be found here, and if you wish to mingle with other species as well, do not miss to visit Ram Sagar.

Sculpture Park

The grand Madhavendra Palace in the Nahargarh Fort was built by Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh II as his luxurious retreat. Two centuries later, curator Peter Nagy has decorated it with exquisite sculptures that reflect the past, giving rise to the sculpture park. This joint project between the Government of Rajasthan and the NGO Saat Saath Arts opened to the public on 10 December 2017, becoming a space for contemporary artists to showcase their work. It houses 53 artworks from 24 top artists including Indian and International.

Large, imposing sculptures are placed in the royal courtyard which lit up with an exuberant beauty. The royal palace is symmetrical inside but confusing to explore, yet it evokes a sense of awe and wonder. The sculptures inside the palace are smaller yet equally, even more stunning. The Sculpture Park is an annual exhibition, meaning the artworks will be replaced by November 2018, revealing a new narrative.
