✬ State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow Russia✬

An art gallery that began with a merchant's personal collection and today houses more than 130,000 artworks throughout the history of Russia.

The gallery was opened in 1893 when the huge personal collection of about 2000 works of Moscow merchant Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov was permanently displayed to the Russian public. Originally housed in a small building to the south of the Kremlin, the gallery grew significantly in size as it collected more and more pieces of art throughout the 20th century. The State Tretyakov Gallery provides an insight into the history of Russian art not seen anywhere else. It takes you to works of art by artists from the 10th century onwards, works that were otherwise not publicized or very famous. The gallery is an important study to understand the inspirations drawn by famous Russian artists of the 20th century. Its massive collection of 130,000 items is displayed in 62 rooms and provides an extremely educational experience!
