Moscow's most recognizable structure is undoubtedly the Kremlin, a 15th-century fortified complex that covers an area of 275,000 square meters surrounded by walls built in the 1400s. The Grand Kremlin Palace - which has more than 700 rooms - was once home to the Tsar family and is now the official residence of the President of the Russian Federation, although most heads of state prefer to live elsewhere.
The sprawling complex also includes several other buildings, some of which are open to the public and can be visited regularly. In addition to three cathedrals (which once housed the Tsar's crown) and several towers, the Kremlin is also home to the Armory Building, a museum containing everything from royal crowns and royal carriages to Ivan the Terrible and the ivory throne.
