This was India's first entirely marble mausoleum. Empress Noor Jahan, wife of Emperor Jahangir, constructed it in memory of her father Mir Ghiyas Beg, who went by the title Itimad-ud-Daula and served as a minister under Shah Jahan.
This tomb signifies a shift from Mughal architecture's initial style to its more mature form. It's noteworthy for being the inaugural project to feature pietra dura work and for its scenic placement along the Yamuna River. The building blends Indo-Islamic design elements, sporting arched doorways and towers with eight sides. Gazing down at Itimad-ud-Daulah's tomb gives you the impression of a decorative box nestled in a garden. Standing proudly beside the Yamuna, this striking edifice became an inspiration for the later creation of the world-famous Taj Mahal.
