Pushkar Lake is situated amidst the Aravalli mountain range in Pushkar, Rajasthan. Surrounded by 51 bathing ghats (a flight of stairs leading to the water) and over 501 temples, it is considered the sacred lake for Hindus in India where pilgrims come in large numbers to take the holy dip.

According to Hindu theology, there are five sacred lakes collectively called Panch-Sarovar, namely- Manasarovar, Bindu Sarovar, Narayan Sarovar, Pampa Sarovar and Pushkar Sarovar. Of these, Pushkar Lake is the most important for Hindus. It is believed that when Lord Brahma's Vajra was destroying Nabha, the lake was formed where his lotus petals had fallen.

Located in the oldest city of Pushkar, often called 'Tirtha-Raj' or the King of Pilgrimages, the lake traces its existence to the 2nd century BC. Lakhs of devotees visit this lake because of the belief that the famous water of Pushkar washes away all the sins of life. On the most sacred day of Kartik Purnima, taking a dip in the lake has been considered equivalent to the benefits derived from performing yagya (fire sacrifice) for many centuries.
