Amritsar is a very important religious center for Hindus and Sikhs. Several temples and gurdwaras include Gurdwara Manji Sahib, Akal Takht, Shivala Bhai Mandir, Gurdwara Beboxar Sahib, Gurdwara Bir Baba Buddha, Tala Sahib Gurdwara and Gopal Mandir.

🛕 Jalianwala Bagh 🛕

One of the most tragic events in colonial India took place on 13 April 1919 at Jallianwala Bagh. Farmers from different villages had gathered here, unaware of a new law that banned meetings between local people. Suspecting a protest, British officers led by Colonel Reginald Dyer opened fire in the area and created a situation of devastation. Several people were killed by bullets, many in a stampede and many others jumped into a nearby well in an attempt to save themselves. The death toll is believed to be 379. There are still bullets and bloodstains in and around the well in motion.

Amritsar is named after Amrit Sarovar which was built by Guru Ram Das in Tung village. Guru Ram Das believed that the water of the lake had healing powers. The land was bought by him for a small sum of Rs 700, and a temple complex was built around it. Gradually, the village developed and came to be known as Chak Ram Das, which eventually became Amritsar which transformed into a pool of nectar.
