Allahabad, now officially known as Prayagraj, is a city located in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Reminiscent of all that is spiritual and sacred in Hinduism, Allahabad is famous for the Triveni Sangam or the meeting point of three rivers - the Ganges, Yamuna and Saraswati. Built on the site of the ancient city of Prayag, Allahabad has, since time immemorial, hosted the largest Hindu gathering on the banks of the Sangam - the Maha Kumbh Mela. While the city of Sangam is often passed up for more travel-friendly cities, Allahabad has much more to offer than just its religion.

Prayag or Prayagraj was the ancient name of the city of Allahabad. Pra means "first" and Yaga means "devotion". Prayag also symbolizes the coming together of the Ganges, Yamuna and Saraswati rivers. After the Mughal invasion, Emperor Akbar was impressed by the name of the city of Ilahbas, which meant "abode of God".

Hazratganj, a major shopping area located in the heart of Lucknow, is famous for its 'chaat' and 'kulfi' eateries, luxurious Mughlai restaurants and various shopping complexes. All the buildings in Hazratganj have a distinct Victorian architecture, and you can buy virtually anything – from cheap accessories and trinkets to high-end clothing, footwear and jewellery.

One of the top places to visit in Allahabad, if you are spiritually inclined (and even if you are not as this place is worthy of a visit), Triveni Sangam is a place to visit with tourists and locals all year round. The Maha Kumbh Mela is a religious occasion held here every twelve years and is attended by lakhs of pilgrims from all over the world. The Allahabad Fort is another monument of historical importance and a heritage site recognized by UNESCO. This fort, built during the reign of Akbar, is also a fine example of the art and craftsmanship of the Mughal period.

Other popular places to visit in Allahabad reckon on Anand Bhawan, All Saints Cathedral, Chandra Shekhar Azad Park, and Allahabad Museum.

Allahabad is mentioned in the Hindu scripture Mahabharata as Kaushambi, the place where the Kuru rulers of Hastinapur built their capital. It was also a provincial capital of the Mughals under the rule of Jahangir. These places are full of heritage, history and stories, and once you visit, you will surely see Allahabad in a different way.
