Impressed by his penance, Lord Vishnu appeared before him in the form of Hrishikesh. Therefore, this place was named after him.
Another and perhaps more famous legend is of Lord Lakshmana crossing the river Ganga on a rope bridge. This bridge is known as "Lakshman Jhula". The original bridge made of jute was destroyed due to floods in 1924. Later, this bridge was rebuilt, and today it stands as a great tourist attraction. The fact that the river Ganga, on the banks of which Rishikesh is situated, flows through the Himalayas, makes it a sacred river in the eyes of the sages.
{Ancient Wisdom: Bodh Gaya}Weather: 16 - 28°C,Ideal Period: 2-4 D,Bodhgaya, known as Uruvela in ancient times, was situated on the banks of the Nerajana River, now known as the Leelajana River. It is believed that King Ashoka built the first temple on this land. According to theory, Buddha was born on the auspicious night of Baisakhi Purnima in 563 BC on the land that is now Nepal. Born the son of a king, Prince Siddhartha renounced his worldly possessions at the age of 29 and traveled far and wide in search of eternal truth. Even after observing self-torture for 6 years, he did not attain liberation, so he left the practice. He then discovered the Eightfold Path, which freed him from lust, hatred, and delusion, and thus he attained enlightenment, or "Buddhahood". The tree under which he attained enlightenment is the famous Bodhi tree. In the coming days he gained many followers and the village became a pilgrimage site. Emperor Ashoka himself was one of his greatest disciples and built the famous Mahabodhi Temple. The sacred village gained momentum around the 13th century and many shrines and temples were built. But soon after, the area fell into the hands of cruel Turkish emperors and they razed the city. Later, when Britain ruled, the city was once again entirely sacrosanct. The city has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and is currently one of the most significant Buddhist pilgrimage sites.{Southern Gem: Meenakshi Temple}Weather : 11 - 20°C,Timings : 8:30 to 13:00 , 5:00 to 20:30 (Monday- Tuesday, Thursday), 8:00 to 21:00 (Wednesday), 8;30 to 13:00 , 5:00 to 17:00 (Friday), 8:30 to 20:30 (Saturday- Sunday),Deities : Ganesh, Sri Rama, Sita, Lakshman, Ayappa Swamy, Navgraha, Durga, Lord Shiva, Parvati etc.,Festivals Celebrated : Navarathri, Sri Durgashtami, Suvasini Puja, Ganesh Chaturthi, Rudra Japam etc.,The Sri Meenakshi Temple in Houston is believed to be a replica of the temple in India and its high roof and intricately carved marble structure is built on a large piece of land.
