A highly protective elephant and tiger reserve, 53 tigers and over 900 elephants as well as more than 62 species of mammals are thriving in the lush greens. Deer, mouse deer, dhol (Indian wild dog), mongoose, fox and leopard are some of the commonly found mammals in Thekkady. It also has 300+ species of birds, 45 species of reptiles, 40+ varieties of fish and 160 types of insects. Situated on the banks of Periyar Lake, this place has developed a variety of vegetation in its lush green forests. About 75 percent of the entire area is covered by evergreen or semi-evergreen rain forests with trees of Bacteroidetes indicia, Calan axerillata, Hope parviflora, Canarium strictum, Artocarpus 104 hirsutus and Bischophyte javanica. It has recorded more than 2000 species of flowering plants, 170 species of ferns and 145 types of orchids which are frequently studied and used as resources by the local people. With activities like tiger trails and bamboo rafting, the greenery of this place can be easily explored.

Itinerary
