Literally, an island that resembles the shape of a tortoise, Kutch is a former princely state of India that retains its grandeur from the past. With its vast expanse of the white salt desert, Kutch is perhaps one of the most beautiful yet surreal places in India. The place comes to life during winters when Rann Mahotsav is held everywhere from December-February with huge camp settlements with cultural events, functions and adventure activities like hot-air ballooning.

Kutch is also the largest district of India with a very low population density. Also, Kutch is located on the Indo-Pakistan border and you can see parts of Pakistan from Kutch. Kutch is also famous for craft and embroidery works, Flamingo Sanctuary and Wild Ass Sanctuary. Bhuj is an ideal starting point for a trip to the Rann of Kutch. The beautiful beaches of Mandvi near Bhuj are also totally worth visiting during your trip to Kutch. Do not miss to visit the ancient city of Dholavira.

History :- The history of Kutch dates back to prehistoric times. Traces of its existence have been found in Indus Valley sites. This city was mentioned by Alexander in his early writings. It was ruled by the Greeks before falling into the hands of the Maurya Empire. For the next few centuries, Kutch was ruled by several dynasties including the Western satraps, Guptas, Chavdas, Chalukyas and Jadega brothers. The ancestors of the last ruler Raidhan II also found Kathiawar. In 1819, due to defeat in a war, Kutch came under the jurisdiction of the British. When India gained independence, Kutch became the 'Dominion of India' and was declared a separate state in 1950. In 1956, it was merged with Bombay State. Finally, when the two states of Maharashtra and Gujarat were formed in 1960, Kutch became a part of the latter.

Great White Rann :- The Great Rann of Kutch is a seasonal salt bog located in the Thar Desert in the Kutch district of Gujarat. The area is special for its spectacular scenery on full moon nights when the moonlight shines on the salt crystals formed over the marshes. A visit to this place will be a leisure trip where you can unwind from all your stress and enjoy the delicacies at some of the resorts. Although there is only the White Rann Desert to see in this place, travellers can also visit other places of interest like Kala Dungar and Gandhi-nu-Gam for shopping and leisure. Tourists can also enjoy golf carts, ATV rides, camel cart excursions, paramotoring, meditation, yoga and Gujarati culture at select resorts in Tent City. Gujarat Tourism arranges a Rann Utsav every year for the tourists.

Restaurants and Local Food :- Cuisine in Kutch is predominantly vegetarian, given the influence of Jainism and Brahmanism, both of which follow strict vegetarianism and often avoid garlic, potatoes, yams and onions as well. A local dish in the area is bajra na rotla which is usually accompanied by a refreshing glass of lassi, chaas or buttermilk, like almost every other meal in the district. You can also taste a typical Gujarati thali which will consist of roti, dal or kadhi, curd, rice and vegetable curry. , Most of these are dry snacks and are ideal for traveling or taking home. Try these along with traditional Gujarati sweets like Ghevar, Malpua, Basundi and many more.
