History
Holi is celebrated as a national holiday in India and with other regional holidays. The origins of Holi come from Hindu mythology, including the popular legend of Hiranyakashipu, a demon king who wanted to be immortal. He wanted people to worship him, but his own son Prahlad worshiped Lord Vishnu. This angered him and one day the demon king asked his sister Holika to sit on the fire with Prahlad, who was free from the fire.
Once Holika sat in the fire with Prahlad, the fire could not touch Prahlad. Actually, Holika was killed by this. Then Lord Vishnu killed the demon king.
